‘The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt with the heart.” This is a brilliant quote by Hellen Keller that makes you stop and think about your relationships with others.
Humans are social animals, this is a fact. We love to make connections and form relationships with each other. Although your parents can give you a lot of meaningful advice, it’s often not possible for them to help you in the same way a friend can. Our friends are the ones that help us move forward in life. When you find a true friend you must hold on to them.
But what is a true friend? Although figuring this out can be tricky, here are a few points that can help you understand what true friendship is:
● They support you through thick and through thin.
Most friends can stick with you through the easy times, but only true friends will stay when the going gets tough. There are times when it can feel like your world is being turned upside down. Often, you start lashing out at the ones around you for no reason at all. It can be easy for people to stop being friends with you simply because they don’t want to deal with you when you’re feeling down.
The truth is you need good friends more when you’re going through a challenging time. One of the signs of a true friend is that they can tell when you are not acting like yourself. There are always going to be hard patches in life that make you want to give up hope. Having someone next to you who you can rely on can make a world of difference.
● You are completely comfortable around them.
Being comfortable with other people can be pretty tough. It’s hard to figure out what to say and how to act if you don’t know a person well. You always try to show the best side of yourself to strangers cause that’s how you make a favorable impression. However one of the best things about a true friend is that you won’t have to put on a mask when you’re around them; you can just be yourself.
A good friend will make you feel completely at ease, even in the most awkward circumstances. One sign of friendship is when you could be having the worst day and be in a terrible mood but when you meet your friend, they’ll put you at ease. You don’t have to worry about what impression you’re making or whether or not you’re going to make them uncomfortable. In a sense when you’re around someone you can trust, you finally feel free to be yourself.
● It’s easy to go to them for advice.
Good advice often comes from the people who know you the best. Usually, the times when you need the most advice are when you are at your most vulnerable. Asking for help when you’re at a low point is very difficult to do. One way you know that you have a true friend by your side is that they’re ready to talk with you no matter what. True friends don’t have to be available all the time but they are always ready to lend some advice when you need it.
This doesn’t just include the times when you’re in desperate need of help. A true sign of friendship is when you can ask your friend about anything in the world and they’ll be happy to respond. Often it feels weird to bother someone unless it’s an emergency, but the majority of the time we just need someone to have casual chat with. At times a random conversation is just what you need to make you feel good.
● A true friend understands you well.
Friends don’t just help with advice, they know how to make you feel better in nearly all situations. There are a few aspects of your life that you might not feel comfortable talking about with a family member. Having a friend next to you who’s been in a similar place as you can be extremely helpful.
Occasionally all you need in life is for someone to listen to you. Other times you need to be told that you’re slacking off too much or that you are overworking yourself. It can be complicated to realize when you’re not taking care of yourself, but that’s what a true friend is for.
● True friends help you grow into a better person.
Good friendships don’t just help you relax when you need it, they can also help you become a better person. A true friend will know when to call you out when you’re not being true to yourself. Friendships that help you bring out the best in yourself are highly valuable.
These friendships can help you grow and thrive. Friends that actively encourage you to be a better version of yourself can help you reach new heights. One of the signs of a true friend is they bring you up when you’re down but also keep you in check when you start getting ahead of yourself. A helping hand is sometimes all we need to put us on the right path.
Even with all of these points, it’s still hard to summarize what all the signs of a true friend are. It is one of those things that mean so much to every one of us but it’s a hard concept to explain. The value that true friendship can bring into your life is seemingly impossible to put into words.
However, I would like to leave you with a quote by C.S Lewis from his book ‘The Four Loves’, which does a great job of putting this value into words- “Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”
